Princess Diaries 3? Shut up!

There are few things girls in 2001 wanted more than to be Mia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia. Princess Diaries brought us iconic characters and moments such as Mia’s cat Fat Louie, the M&M “Sorry” pizza, and Julie Andrews eating a corn dog and knighting a bus driver. This movie is near perfection. We were able to reconnect with our darling Mia in 2004 when The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement but since then it seems like life in Genovia has gone undocumented. That is until now.

After much teasing, it seems like Princess Diaries 3 is finally moving into production. The announcement came today from Deadline when they announced that Adele Lim will be working with Disney again as the director of the third installment. Lim previously worked with Disney as the writer for Raya and the Last Dragon which came out in 2021. Debra Martin Chase is set to produce the film, and Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.

Lim said, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life! We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

As far as we know Anne Hathaway is set to return to her role as Mia Thermopolis but there is no word as of yet on the rest of the casting.

In my personal opinion, I have huge hopes for this movie. The Princess Diaries movies were massively influential to me and the soundtracks were that of my childhood. I hope that the third movie continues to push the story forward and not just pay lip service to the fans. Of course, I would love nothing more than to see Chris Pine, Heather Matarazzo, Robert Schwartzman Héctor Elizondo, and Queen of my heart Julie Andrews make their returns as well. But what do you think? Are you excited to return to Genovia?
